Inkscape
Inkscape is a free, open source vector graphics editor. It uses SVG as its native file format and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD. Licensed under GPLv2+, it is the most popular free alternative to Adobe Illustrator.
What it does
The core workflow is drawing and editing vector shapes. The Pen tool (B) creates Bezier curves point by point, the Node tool (N) lets you adjust those curves afterward, and shape tools draw rectangles, circles, stars, and spirals. Boolean operations (Path > Union, Difference, Intersection, Exclusion) combine or subtract shapes from each other.
Text editing is full featured - the Text tool (T) places editable text on the canvas, with font selection and spacing controls, plus the ability to flow text along a path. Layers (Layer > Layers and Objects) organize complex drawings into manageable groups. Align and Distribute (Shift+Ctrl+A) snaps objects into precise arrangements.
For output, Export PNG Image (Shift+Ctrl+E) renders your work as a bitmap at any DPI. Save As handles PDF and EPS for print output. Trace Bitmap (Path > Trace Bitmap) converts imported photos or scans into editable vector paths.
Advantages
- Completely free and open source with no feature gating
- Native SVG format is the web standard for vector graphics
- Extensive extension system for specialized tasks
- Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD
Drawbacks
- Slower than Illustrator on large files with many objects
- No CMYK color mode for professional print work
- The interface feels less polished than commercial alternatives
- Multi page document support is limited compared to Illustrator
Who it is for
I use Inkscape for logos and SVG assets for websites. It handles those tasks as well as Illustrator does. If you need professional print output with CMYK separations, you will hit its limits. But for web graphics, hobby illustration, laser cutting templates, and technical diagrams, Inkscape does everything you need at zero cost.
