Defraggler

Defraggler is a free disk defragmentation tool from Piriform, the company behind CCleaner. Unlike the built-in Windows defragmenter, Defraggler lets you defragment individual files instead of forcing you to process an entire drive. It displays a color-coded drive map that shows exactly where fragmented, free, and system blocks sit on your hard disk.

What it does

Select a drive and hit Analyze to see how fragmented it is. Defraggler scans the disk and presents a percentage score along with a list of the most fragmented files. From there, run a full defragmentation or switch to Quick Defrag, which targets only the worst offenders to save time. The visual drive map updates in real time as blocks get rearranged.

The File List tab is where Defraggler stands apart. Browse to any file on the drive, right-click it, and defragment just that one file. This is useful when a specific large file (a database, a virtual machine image, a video project) is slowing things down and you do not want to wait for a full disk pass.

Schedule defragmentation to run at set times through Settings. Defraggler also reads S.M.A.R.T. health data from your drive, showing temperature and error counts in the Health tab. One important note: this tool is designed for traditional spinning hard drives (HDD). Running defragmentation on an SSD provides no benefit and can reduce the drive's lifespan.

Advantages

  • Defragments individual files without processing the entire drive
  • Visual drive map shows fragmentation in real time
  • Lighter and faster than the built-in Windows defragmenter
  • Completely free with no feature restrictions

Drawbacks

  • No longer actively updated by Piriform
  • Irrelevant for SSD users, which covers most modern PCs
  • Installer may bundle optional Piriform products if you skip the custom setup
  • Boot-time defragmentation is not available

Who it is for

I recommend Defraggler to anyone still running a traditional hard drive who wants more control than Windows provides by default. If you need to defragment a single large file that is causing slow reads, this is one of the few free tools that can do it. For SSD-only systems, there is no reason to install it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I defragment my SSD?
No. SSDs do not benefit from defragmentation because they have no moving parts and access any location equally fast. Running a defragmenter on an SSD adds unnecessary write cycles that can reduce its lifespan. Defraggler is designed for traditional spinning hard drives only.
Is Defraggler still maintained?
Defraggler has not received major updates in recent years. It still works on current Windows versions. Piriform continues to offer it for download but active development appears to have stopped.
Is Defraggler better than Windows defrag?
Defraggler offers individual file defragmentation and a visual drive map that the built-in Windows tool lacks. The Windows defragmenter handles basic whole-drive defragmentation adequately. Defraggler adds more control and visibility into the process.
