7-Zip - Free File Archiver
7-Zip is a free, open source file archiver by Igor Pavlov. It compresses and extracts archives in most common formats - ZIP, RAR, TAR, GZ, and its own 7z format, which typically compresses better than ZIP. The program is completely free under the LGPL license, with no ads, no nag screens, and no paid tier.
It runs on Windows natively and is available on Linux and macOS through the command line (p7zip). The installer is under 2 MB.
What it does
Right-click any archive file and you get 7-Zip in the context menu with options to extract here, extract to a subfolder, or open in 7-Zip's file manager. For creating archives, select files, right-click, and choose 7-Zip > Add to archive. Pick your format (7z or ZIP for compatibility), compression level (from Store to Ultra), and optionally set a password with AES-256 encryption.
The 7z format consistently beats ZIP on compression ratio, sometimes producing files 30-70% smaller depending on the content. The tradeoff is that 7z is slower to compress and not every system can open it without additional software. For sharing, ZIP is safer. For personal backups, 7z saves more space.
Split archives (Add to archive > Split to volumes) let you break large files into chunks of a specified size - useful for email attachments or USB drives with file size limits. The integrity test (right-click > 7-Zip > Test archive) verifies that an archive isn't corrupted.
Advantages
- Completely free and open source, no catches
- 7z format has better compression than ZIP
- AES-256 encryption for password-protected archives
- Tiny installer, minimal system footprint
Drawbacks
- Interface is functional but plain
- 7z format not universally supported (ZIP is safer for sharing)
- No built-in repair for damaged archives
- Context menu integration can be finicky on Windows 11
Who it is for
7-Zip is the default recommendation for anyone who needs to compress or extract files on Windows. It handles everything WinRAR does, minus the RAR creation, and it costs nothing. If you don't have a specific reason to use WinRAR or WinZip, 7-Zip is the obvious pick.
