TeamViewer - Remote Desktop Software
TeamViewer is a remote desktop application by TeamViewer GmbH (Germany) that lets you connect to and control another computer over the internet. It is free for personal use. Business licenses start at $24.90 per month with annual billing. All connections use AES 256 bit encryption.
It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.
Remote access
Both sides install TeamViewer. The person being connected to shares their ID number and temporary password. You type those in and get full control of their desktop, including keyboard and mouse. File transfers work by dragging and dropping during the session. If the remote machine has multiple monitors, you can switch between them or view all at once. The connection works through firewalls without configuring port forwarding.
Other features
Remote printing lets you print a document on the remote computer using your local printer. Session logging creates an audit trail of all connections. The mobile apps let you access your desktop from a phone or tablet. Unattended access allows you to connect to a remote machine without someone sitting there to accept the connection, which is useful for accessing your own work computer from home.
Advantages
- Free for personal use
- Works across all platforms including mobile
- No firewall or router configuration needed
- Unattended access for your own machines
Drawbacks
- Business licensing is expensive ($24.90 to $229.90 per month)
- TeamViewer sometimes flags personal use as commercial and blocks connections
- AnyDesk and RustDesk are lighter alternatives for personal remote access
- Windows has built in Remote Desktop (RDP) if both machines run Windows Pro
Who it is for
TeamViewer is the standard choice for remote tech support and accessing your own computers remotely. The free personal license covers most home use. If TeamViewer flags you as commercial, AnyDesk or the open source RustDesk are worth trying. For connecting between Windows Pro machines on the same network, built in Remote Desktop works without any extra software.
