DWG TrueView
DWG TrueView is a free viewer for AutoCAD drawings that lets you open, inspect, and print DWG and DXF files without owning AutoCAD. It also includes DWG TrueConvert, a batch conversion tool for saving drawings in older or newer DWG format versions. Windows only.
What it does
Open any DWG or DXF file and navigate the drawing with zoom, pan, and layer controls. You can toggle layers on and off to isolate specific elements, measure distances between points using the DIST command, and inspect object properties like dimensions, layer assignments, and colors. The viewing experience mirrors AutoCAD's interface, so anyone familiar with CAD software will feel at home.
Printing works through the same Plot dialog as AutoCAD. Set your paper size, scale, and print area, then output to a physical printer or export to PDF. The PDF export is particularly useful when you need to share drawings with people who have no CAD software at all.
DWG TrueConvert handles version compatibility problems. When a client sends you a DWG saved in a newer format than your software supports, load it into TrueConvert and save it as an older version. Batch mode processes entire folders at once, which saves time when dealing with large project deliveries containing dozens of files.
Advantages
- Completely free for viewing and printing AutoCAD drawings
- Batch conversion between DWG format versions
- PDF export without needing AutoCAD
- Familiar AutoCAD-style interface for CAD professionals
Drawbacks
- Cannot edit drawings in any way, strictly view-only
- Large installation size (over 1 GB) for a viewer
- Windows only, no macOS or Linux support
- Slow startup compared to lightweight alternatives like A360 Viewer online
Who it is for
I recommend DWG TrueView to anyone who receives AutoCAD files but does not need to edit them. Contractors reviewing blueprints, project managers checking deliverables, or engineers who need to print technical drawings will get the most out of it. If you only need occasional viewing, the free A360 Viewer in a browser might be faster to set up, but for regular work with DWG files and version conversion, TrueView is the better tool.
