SketchUp Free
SketchUp Free is a web-based 3D modeling tool from Trimble that runs entirely in the browser. It uses an intuitive push/pull approach where you draw flat shapes and extrude them into 3D objects. The free version covers core modeling features, while the paid Pro and Studio editions add desktop software, advanced rendering, and file format support.
What it does
You start by drawing 2D shapes with the Line, Rectangle, Circle, or Arc tools. Click a flat surface and select the Push/Pull tool (or press P), then drag upward to turn that shape into a 3D solid. This single mechanic lets you build walls, furniture, boxes, and architectural forms quickly. For precise dimensions, select any drawing tool, click your starting point, and type the measurement (e.g. 3m, 150cm) on the keyboard before pressing Enter. The value appears in the Measurements box at the bottom right.
The 3D Warehouse, accessible from the left panel, contains millions of user-uploaded models. Search for "dining table" or "window frame" and insert it directly into your scene. This saves hours when furnishing a room or adding standard architectural components. For navigation, hold the middle mouse button to orbit, scroll to zoom, and Shift plus middle button to pan. Grouping objects (right-click > Make Group) keeps them from sticking to neighboring geometry, which is how SketchUp handles separate parts of a model.
Finished models can be downloaded as SKP files (native format), STL for 3D printing, or PNG screenshots. The free web version does not export to DWG or DXF, which are common in architecture and engineering workflows. That limitation pushes professional users toward the paid desktop edition.
Advantages
- Runs in the browser with no installation required
- Push/pull modeling is intuitive for people with no 3D experience
- 3D Warehouse provides millions of free ready-made models
- Precise measurements by typing dimensions directly from the keyboard
Drawbacks
- Free version lacks DWG/DXF export for professional architecture use
- Browser performance drops with complex models over a few thousand faces
- No offline access, requires a stable internet connection
- Rendering and animation tools are only available in paid editions
Who it is for
I recommend SketchUp Free to anyone starting with 3D modeling, especially for home renovation projects, furniture design, or basic architectural visualization. The push/pull method makes it possible to create usable models within the first hour of learning. If your work requires CAD file exports or photorealistic rendering, you will eventually need the paid desktop version, but the free browser edition covers a surprising amount of ground for hobbyists and students.

Features & How-To Guide
| # | Feature | How to use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3D modeling in browser | Go to app.sketchup.com › Log in with Trimble account › Click Create New › Start drawing with Line or Rectangle tool. |
| 2 | PDF form creation | Draw closed shape with Rectangle or Line tool › Choose Push/Pull (P) › Click surface and drag up or down. |
| 3 | Geometric shape drawing | Draw ground floor plan with Rectangle tool › Push/Pull walls to height › Add window openings by drawing rectangles on walls › Push/Pull inward. |
| 4 | Vector drawing (Draw) | Create room › 3D Warehouse (icon in left panel) › Search furniture (e.g. sofa, table) › Click model › Insert into scene. |
| 5 | Importing models from 3D Warehouse | Click 3D Warehouse icon in left panel › Search model (e.g. chair) › Click chosen model › Download › Model appears in scene. |
| 6 | Manual camera control | Choose drawing tool (Line/Rectangle) › Click start point › Type dimension from keyboard (e.g. 3m or 120cm) › Enter. Dimension appears in Measurements field. |
| 7 | Backup creation before partitioning | Use Rectangle and Push/Pull to create basic solids › Tape Measure (T) for precise dimensions › Type dimensions from keyboard after choosing tool. |
| 8 | Export 3D model to file | Hamburger menu (three lines) › Download › Choose format (SKP, STL or PNG) › Save. |
| 9 | 3D object grouping | Select elements with Select tool (spacebar) › Right-click › Make Group. Group behaves as one object and does not stick to rest of model. |
| 10 | Navigation in 3D view | Orbit: middle mouse button. Zoom: scroll. Pan: Shift + middle button. Or choose Orbit/Zoom/Pan tools from bar. |
