PowerISO - Disc Image Tool

PowerISO is a disc image utility by PowerISO Computing Inc. that handles creating, editing, mounting, and burning image files. It reads just about every image format out there - ISO, BIN, NRG, DAA, CDI, and more. The free version works but nags you with a registration reminder and limits image creation to 300 MB. The paid license removes both restrictions.

What it does

Right-click any ISO file and select "Mount with PowerISO" to load it as a virtual drive. For creating images, go to File > New, drag in whatever files and folders you want, and save as ISO. The tool also rips images from physical CD/DVD drives (Tools > Create Image) and burns images back to disc (Tools > Burn).

Where PowerISO gets more use than Windows' built-in ISO support is the bootable USB creator. Go to Tools > Create Bootable USB Drive, point it at a Windows or Linux ISO, select your USB drive, and click Start. It handles the partitioning and boot record setup automatically.

You can also open and edit existing ISOs without extracting them first. Add files, delete files, rename things inside the image, and save. The format converter (Tools > Convert) handles conversions between ISO, BIN, NRG, and PowerISO's own DAA format, which supports compression and encryption.

Advantages

  • Reads practically every disc image format
  • Bootable USB creation built in
  • Can edit ISO contents directly without extracting
  • Format conversion between image types

Drawbacks

  • Free version limited to 300 MB images and shows nag screen
  • Windows 10/11 mount ISOs natively
  • Rufus is free and better for bootable USB creation
  • Interface looks like it hasn't changed since 2008

Who it is for

PowerISO covers a lot of ground if you work with disc images regularly - editing ISOs, converting between formats, making bootable drives. For just mounting ISO files, Windows handles that on its own now. If you mainly need bootable USB drives, Rufus does that for free without file size limits.
