CDBurnerXP - Free Disc Burning Software

CDBurnerXP is a free disc burning application by Canneverbe Limited that handles CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs. It burns data discs, audio CDs, ISO images, and can create bootable media. The software is freeware for both personal and commercial use.

It runs on Windows only. Worth knowing: the company behind it was dissolved in March 2025, so there is no active development. The last release still works on current Windows, but don't expect updates.

Burning and ISO tools

Add files and folders to a compilation, pick your disc type and burning speed, and hit Burn. For ISO images, go to File > Burn disc from ISO File. You can also go the other way and save any compilation as an ISO file instead of burning it. Boot disc creation is under Disc > Boot Options, where you point it to a boot image.

Audio and disc copying

The audio CD mode accepts MP3, FLAC, WAV, WMA, and other formats. Add up to 99 tracks and burn a standard audio CD playable in any CD player. Disc copying works drive to drive or through an intermediate image file. A verification step after burning checks for read errors.

Advantages

  • Completely free with no paid version or nag screens
  • Burns data, audio, and ISO to CD/DVD/Blu-ray
  • Creates and burns ISO images
  • Post burn verification catches errors

Drawbacks

  • Developer company dissolved in 2025, no future updates expected
  • Disc burning itself is increasingly irrelevant as USB drives replace optical media
  • ImgBurn is another free alternative, though also no longer updated
  • Windows has built in ISO burning (right click > Burn disc image)

Who it is for

CDBurnerXP is useful if you still burn CDs or DVDs and want a free tool that covers all the basics. Since the developer is gone, treat it as finished software - it works for now, but if a future Windows update breaks it, nobody will fix it. For ISO burning alone, Windows handles that natively.
