Victoria
Victoria is a low-level HDD and SSD diagnostic tool that tests disk surfaces sector by sector, reads S.M.A.R.T. health data, and can attempt to repair damaged sectors through remapping. Originally a DOS utility created by Sergei Kazansky, it has been maintained as a Windows application since version 5 and remains one of the most thorough disk diagnostic tools available.
What it does
The surface test is Victoria's core feature. It reads every sector on the disk and displays a real-time graphical map where colors indicate response times: green sectors are healthy, yellow ones show minor delays, orange ones are slow, and red ones are damaged or unreadable. This visual representation makes it easy to spot degrading areas of a drive that might not yet show up as errors in normal use. You can test in read-only mode for safe diagnostics, or switch to write mode for destructive testing that verifies the physical media.
When damaged sectors are found, Victoria offers a remap mode that instructs the drive's firmware to relocate data from bad sectors to spare reserve areas. This can extend the usable life of a failing HDD. The S.M.A.R.T. tab provides a detailed breakdown of health attributes, including reallocated sector count, pending sectors, power-on hours and temperature, giving you a complete picture of the drive's condition.
Advantages
- Sector-by-sector surface testing with a real-time color-coded map of disk health
- Can remap bad sectors to extend the life of failing hard drives
- Portable executable that runs without installation
- Reads detailed S.M.A.R.T. attributes that simpler tools like CrystalDiskInfo do not expose
Drawbacks
- Interface looks dated and can be confusing for users unfamiliar with disk diagnostics
- Write and remap modes can destroy data if used incorrectly
- Full surface scans on large drives (4 TB and above) can take many hours to complete
- Remap functionality is limited on modern SSDs due to how flash storage handles bad blocks internally
Who it is for
I reach for Victoria whenever CrystalDiskInfo flags a drive as "Caution" and I need to understand exactly how bad the situation is. The surface scan tells me whether a drive has a handful of weak sectors in one area or widespread degradation across the platter. If you repair computers, diagnose failing storage, or want to verify a used drive before trusting it with your data, Victoria gives you the deepest look at disk health without booting into a separate environment. It is not a beginner-friendly tool, but nothing else gives you this level of detail from within Windows.
