VEGAS Pro
VEGAS Pro is a professional video editor from MAGIX Software GmbH, which acquired it from Sony in 2016. It handles video editing, color grading, audio mixing, and multicam editing with support for up to 32 camera angles. Pricing starts at $19.99 per month or $199 for a lifetime license.
Windows only.
What it does
Drag clips from Project Media onto the timeline, trim by pulling edges, and split with the S key. The timeline is the core workspace - every clip, transition, and audio track lives here. VEGAS has always had a drag-and-drop workflow that feels more intuitive than some competitors.
Color correction goes from basic (Video FX > Color Corrector for brightness, contrast, saturation) to advanced grading with Color Wheels and Video Scopes (Ctrl+Shift+W). Multicam editing handles up to 32 synchronized camera angles - sync them by audio, then switch between views in real time on the preview monitor.
Audio gets its own mixing console (Ctrl+Shift+3) with per-track volume, EQ, compression, and reverb. Motion tracking follows objects through a clip using Bezier Masking, letting you apply effects or blur that move with the tracked subject. Over 300 built-in effects are available, plus support for third party OFX plugins like Boris FX and Sapphire.
Advantages
- Multicam editing supports up to 32 camera angles
- Intuitive drag-and-drop timeline workflow
- Built-in audio mixing console with per-track effects
- OFX plugin support for thousands of third party effects
Drawbacks
- Windows only, no macOS or Linux version
- Less stable than Adobe Premiere Pro on large projects
- Smaller community and fewer tutorials than DaVinci Resolve or Premiere
- No free tier - DaVinci Resolve offers comparable features at no cost
Who it is for
VEGAS Pro appeals to editors who want professional tools without Adobe's subscription model. The lifetime license option and the intuitive timeline make it popular with YouTubers and independent filmmakers. If budget is the main concern, DaVinci Resolve gives you color grading and editing for free, but VEGAS Pro's simpler learning curve keeps it relevant.
