KMPlayer - Free Media Player

KMPlayer is a free media player by Pandora TV (South Korea) that plays video and audio files without requiring separate codec packs. It supports over 150 video formats and 50 audio formats out of the box. It runs on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Playback features

Open a video file and KMPlayer handles the decoding internally. It plays 4K and 8K content with hardware accelerated rendering. Playback speed is adjustable from 0.5x to 2x through the settings menu, which is useful for lecture recordings or language study. The built in equalizer (Settings > Audio Equalizer) gives you preset and manual frequency band controls.

Subtitle and streaming

KMPlayer loads external subtitles in SRT, ASS, and SSA formats (File > Load Subtitle). If your subtitles are out of sync, right click on them and adjust timing with a slider while the video keeps playing - no need to pause. You can also open network streams (File > Open URL) by pasting HTTP, HTTPS, or RTMP links directly.

Advantages

  • Plays almost any format without installing codec packs
  • On the fly subtitle synchronization
  • Lightweight with hardware accelerated 4K playback
  • Captures screenshots from video (right click > Capture)

Drawbacks

  • Contains ads in the free version
  • VLC Media Player does everything KMPlayer does without ads
  • The installer has bundled software offers in the past
  • mpv is a lighter, open source alternative for power users

Who it is for

KMPlayer works fine as a general media player, especially if you watch foreign language content and need good subtitle handling. For most people, VLC is the more straightforward choice since it has no ads and a larger community. If you want something even more minimal, mpv or MPC-HC are worth considering.
