SUMo
SUMo (Software Update Monitor) is a Windows utility that scans your installed programs and compares their versions against an online database to find available updates. Instead of relying on each program's built in updater, SUMo checks everything from a single window and links you to download pages for newer versions.
What it does
SUMo reads the version numbers of every program installed on your computer and compares them against its online database. After a scan that takes a few seconds, you get a color coded list: green for up to date software, red for programs with newer versions available. Clicking on an outdated program opens a link to the publisher's download page so you can grab the update yourself.
You can add programs to a skip list if you want to stay on a specific version, and a setting lets you exclude beta releases from results so only stable updates appear. The scan can run automatically at startup, so you see outdated software the moment you log in. Reports can be exported as TXT, CSV, HTML, or XML files for documentation.
Advantages
- Scans all installed software from one place instead of checking each program individually
- Small and portable, does not require installation
- Skip list lets you lock specific programs to their current version
- Beta version filter prevents accidental upgrades to unstable releases
Drawbacks
- Does not download or install updates automatically, only links to download pages
- The free version shows advertising and lacks automatic scanning schedules
- Detection accuracy depends on the online database, which may miss niche software
- Windows only, no macOS or Linux support
Who it is for
I find SUMo most useful on machines where many programs are installed and checking each one for updates would take too long. If you manage a home PC with dozens of applications or handle a few office computers, SUMo saves time by showing everything outdated in one list. For users who want fully automatic updates without visiting download pages, Patch My PC or IObit Software Updater are better alternatives because they handle the actual installation too.
