Expressivo Jacek

Expressivo Jacek was a Polish text-to-speech voice engine featuring a male voice named "Jacek." Published by IVO Software (later acquired by Amazon as Ivona), it worked as a standalone TTS reader and as a Windows SAPI voice used by screen readers and other applications.

What it did

The program read Polish text aloud using a male synthesized voice. You pasted text into the application, clicked Play, and Jacek read it. It could also read text selected in any Windows application through a keyboard shortcut. Export to MP3 or WAV created audio files from text for offline listening.

As a SAPI-registered voice, Jacek worked with any Windows application that used the speech API - screen readers for visually impaired users, e-learning software, and document readers. Speed and pitch were adjustable, and a custom dictionary corrected mispronounced words.

Advantages

  • Natural-sounding Polish male voice for its era
  • SAPI integration for system-wide use
  • MP3/WAV export capability
  • Custom pronunciation dictionary

Drawbacks

  • Voice quality outdated compared to modern AI synthesis
  • No longer available for purchase
  • Commercial license was required
  • Amazon Polly, Azure Speech, or ElevenLabs offer better Polish voices

Who it was for

Expressivo Jacek served Polish users needing text-to-speech - for accessibility, proofreading, or audio content creation. The Ivona technology behind it was acquired by Amazon and powers Amazon Polly cloud TTS. For current Polish TTS, Azure Speech Services and Amazon Polly offer neural voices far more natural than Jacek.
