DAEMON Tools Lite - Virtual Drive
DAEMON Tools Lite is a virtual drive emulator for Windows that lets you mount disc image files without a physical CD or DVD drive. It supports ISO, MDS, MDF, NRG, IMG, CCD, and about a dozen other image formats. Made by DISC Soft Ltd., free for personal use with ads, or you can pay to remove them.
Back when every program came on a CD and laptops started dropping optical drives, DAEMON Tools was one of the only ways to open disc images. Windows 10 and 11 can now mount ISO files natively by double-clicking them, but DAEMON Tools still handles formats that Windows cannot - MDS, NRG, CCD, and others that you run into when dealing with older disc backups.
What it does
Right-click any supported image file and choose Mount, or drag it into the DAEMON Tools window. The image shows up as a virtual drive in File Explorer, just like a real disc. You can have up to four virtual drives running at once in the free version.
Beyond mounting, you can create disc images from physical CDs and DVDs (Images > Create Image), build ISO files from folders on your hard drive, and convert between image formats. There is also a tool for writing bootable USB drives from ISO files (Tools > Write Boot Image), which is handy for Windows installation media.
Advantages
- Mounts formats Windows cannot handle natively (MDS, NRG, CCD, ISZ, IMG)
- Up to 4 virtual drives at once
- Creates disc images from physical drives
- Bootable USB creation from ISO files
Drawbacks
- Free installer includes adware offers - read every screen carefully during setup
- Some antivirus programs flag the installer because of the bundled offers
- Windows 10/11 already mount ISO files by double-clicking, so the main use case is narrower than it used to be
- Virtual CloneDrive and WinCDEmu do the same basic job without the bundleware
Who it is for
If you only need to open ISO files, Windows handles that on its own now. DAEMON Tools Lite is still useful if you work with other image formats like MDS, NRG, or CCD, or if you need to create disc images and bootable USB drives from one tool.
