Windows 10 Media Creation Tool
Windows 10 Media Creation Tool is Microsoft's official utility for downloading Windows 10 and creating installation media. It builds a bootable USB drive or downloads an ISO file directly from Microsoft's servers, and it can also perform an in-place upgrade of your current Windows installation to the latest release. Completely free to use.
What it does
Launch the tool and choose between two paths: upgrade this PC now, or create installation media. The upgrade option downloads the latest Windows 10 build and installs it over your existing system, keeping your files, settings, and applications intact. This also works as a repair method when Windows has corrupted system files but still boots.
The installation media path lets you pick a language, edition (Home or Pro), and architecture (64-bit or both 32 and 64-bit). Point it at a USB drive with at least 8 GB of space and the tool downloads Windows 10, formats the drive, and makes it bootable. Alternatively, save the download as an ISO file for burning to a DVD or using with virtualization software.
No product key is required to download or create the media. You only need a valid license when you activate Windows after installation. The tool always downloads the most current release available from Microsoft, so your installation media is up to date the moment you create it.
Advantages
- Official Microsoft tool, guaranteed clean and unmodified images
- Creates bootable USB or ISO in one step
- In-place upgrade preserves files and installed programs
- Always downloads the latest Windows 10 build
Drawbacks
- Download takes a long time on slow connections (4+ GB)
- Cannot create Windows 11 media (separate tool exists for that)
- USB drive gets completely wiped during the process
- No option to select a specific older Windows 10 build
Who it is for
I keep a USB drive made with this tool in my drawer at all times. If Windows breaks, you can boot from it and repair or reinstall without hunting for ISO files online. Anyone building a new PC, reinstalling Windows, or upgrading from an older release should grab this tool first. It is the safest way to get a genuine Windows 10 image.
