Traktor Pro
Traktor Pro is a professional DJ software from Native Instruments. It supports mixing on up to four decks with beat syncing, effects, loops, cue points, Remix Decks for live sampling, and Stem Decks for isolating vocal and instrumental layers. It is a paid application for Windows and macOS, with tight integration for Native Instruments controllers and broad MIDI controller support.
What it does
Load tracks onto decks by dragging them from the built-in browser. The waveform display shows beats, frequency content, and cue points. Hit SYNC and the software locks the tempo of one deck to another, or do it manually with the pitch fader and jog wheel. Crossfade between decks, set loops of any length, and drop cue points at specific moments in a track to jump back to them instantly during a set.
The effects section offers over 40 studio-quality effects including delay, reverb, filter, flanger, and gater. Each effect unit can be assigned to any deck, and the DRY/WET knob controls how much of the effect you hear. Remix Decks turn a deck into a sample grid where you can trigger one-shot samples and loops on the fly. Stem Decks split compatible files into four layers (vocals, drums, bass, melody) so you can mute or isolate individual parts of a track in real time.
Recording a mix is straightforward: hit the record button, perform your set, and stop recording when finished. The output is saved as a WAV or AIFF file. Controller mapping happens through Preferences > Controller Manager, where you can use the Learn function to assign any physical knob or button to a software function.
Advantages
- Four-deck mixing with reliable beat sync and tempo detection
- Stem Decks allow isolating vocals, drums, bass, and melody in real time
- Over 40 built-in effects with flexible routing
- Broad MIDI controller support with detailed custom mapping
Drawbacks
- Paid software with no free tier (only a trial period)
- Steep learning curve for beginners, especially Remix and Stem Decks
- Stem file creation requires a separate process and compatible tracks
- No native streaming integration (Spotify, Tidal, etc.)
Who it is for
I have used Traktor Pro for club sets and private events, and its stability during long sessions is what keeps me coming back. The Stem Decks are a genuine creative tool once you build a library of Stem files. If you are already invested in the Native Instruments ecosystem with an S4 or S2 controller, Traktor Pro is the natural choice. For bedroom DJs just starting out, the price and complexity might be hard to justify over free alternatives, but for anyone performing regularly, it delivers.
