PowerDVD - Blu-ray and Media Player

PowerDVD is a media player by CyberLink that specializes in Blu-ray and DVD playback with video enhancement technology. It is a paid product with editions ranging from about $45 (Standard) to $80 (Ultra), plus a $55/year subscription option. CyberLink is a Taiwanese multimedia software company.

It runs on Windows only.

Disc playback and video quality

Insert a Blu-ray or DVD disc and PowerDVD handles it automatically. The TrueTheater engine applies image processing: HD upscales lower resolution content, Motion interpolates frames to smooth out action scenes (24fps to 60fps), and Denoise reduces visual grain. You control each through sliders in the TrueTheater Effects panel. It also plays 4K and 8K files with GPU acceleration.

Extras

A karaoke mode uses AI to remove vocals from songs, letting you sing along to regular music files or YouTube videos. The YouTube tab lets you browse and watch content up to 8K directly inside PowerDVD. Casting support sends playback to Chromecast, Fire TV, Apple TV, or Roku.

Advantages

  • One of the few software players that handles Blu-ray discs properly
  • TrueTheater video enhancement is noticeable on lower quality content
  • Karaoke vocal removal works surprisingly well

Drawbacks

  • Expensive for a media player when VLC handles most formats for free
  • Only makes sense if you actually play Blu-ray discs
  • Heavy on system resources compared to lightweight players
  • MakeMKV (free for beta) can rip Blu-rays for playback in any player

Who it is for

PowerDVD is for people who play physical Blu-ray discs on their PC and want the best picture quality. If you don't have a Blu-ray drive, there is little reason to pay for it. VLC plays most video files for free, and for streaming content you would use the service's own app anyway.
