GOM Player - Media Player with Subtitle Search
GOM Player is a media player by GOM & Company (South Korea) that plays most video formats without needing extra codec packs. It built its reputation on automatically finding and loading subtitles, which made it popular in countries where subtitle availability matters more than dubbing. The free version has ads. GOM Player Plus removes them and adds AI upscaling.
It runs on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.
What it does
Open a video file and GOM plays it. It handles AVI, MP4, MKV, FLV, WMV, and about a hundred other formats out of the box. If it encounters a codec it doesn't have, it searches for one online and offers to install it - a feature that was more useful a decade ago when codec issues were common.
The subtitle search (right-click > Subtitles > Search Online) scans databases for matching subtitle files and syncs them automatically. You can adjust subtitle timing, font, size, and position through the subtitle settings menu.
Playback speed control (0.25x to 2.0x), screenshot capture (Ctrl+E during playback), and 360-degree VR video support round out the feature list. Hardware acceleration offloads decoding to your GPU for smoother playback on 4K content.
Advantages
- Automatic subtitle search and sync
- Plays most formats without extra codecs
- 360/VR video support
- Available on all major platforms
Drawbacks
- Ads in the free version
- VLC does everything GOM does and is ad-free
- Has had bundleware issues in the past
- The codec finder can be a security concern if it downloads from untrusted sources
Who it is for
GOM Player's main advantage is the automatic subtitle search. If you watch a lot of foreign language content and want subtitles loaded without hunting for SRT files, GOM makes that easier than most players. For everything else, VLC is the safer and more widely supported choice.
