Camtasia

Camtasia is a screen recorder and video editor by TechSmith, sold as a yearly subscription at $179.88 for individual use. It combines recording and editing in one application, so you record your screen and cut the footage without switching tools. TechSmith offers a 14 day trial.

The software targets anyone making tutorials, product demos, or training videos. It runs on Windows and macOS.

Recording and editing

Hit New Recording, choose full screen or a custom region, and press Record. Camtasia captures your screen, microphone, and webcam simultaneously. When you stop, the clip lands on a multi track timeline where you can trim, split, and rearrange segments.

The editor includes cursor effects that highlight or enlarge your mouse pointer, which helps viewers follow along in software walkthroughs. You can also remove your webcam background and replace it with a solid color or image, no green screen needed.

Audio and captions

There is a noise removal tool (Audio Enhancement > Remove Background Noise) that cleans up recordings made without a proper microphone. The Audiate add on generates captions from speech, so you pick a language, let it transcribe, then edit the text before exporting subtitles.

Who it is for

Camtasia fits people who record software tutorials and want editing built in. If you only need screen recording, OBS Studio does that for free. If you need serious video editing, DaVinci Resolve gives you more control at no cost. Camtasia's value is combining both into a simpler workflow.
