AVG AntiVirus FREE
AVG AntiVirus FREE is a free antivirus by Gen Digital (the company behind Norton and Avast). Under the hood, it runs the same malware detection engine as Avast Free Antivirus - same virus definitions, same scan technology, different interface. If you already have Avast, installing AVG is redundant. If you don't have either, both are solid free options.
It runs on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. The free version covers real time protection, file scanning, and web protection. Paid features (VPN, ransomware protection, firewall) require AVG Internet Security.
What it does
After installation, real time protection runs in the background and scans files as you open, download, or execute them. The main dashboard shows your protection status. Click Scan for a full system scan, which checks installed programs, system files, browser extensions, and startup items.
Web Shield blocks malicious websites and downloads in your browser. Email Shield scans attachments in incoming and outgoing email. Both run automatically once enabled in Settings > Protection.
Detected threats go to quarantine where they're isolated from the rest of your system. You can review, permanently delete, or restore them if a detection was a false positive. The hack alert feature (Settings > Privacy) checks if your email address appears in known data breach databases.
Advantages
- Free real time protection with no time limit
- Same detection engine as Avast (99.8% detection rate in independent tests)
- Web and email protection included in free version
- Available on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS
Drawbacks
- Identical engine to Avast Free - no reason to install both
- Frequent upsell prompts to upgrade to paid version
- Heavier on system resources than Windows Defender
- Avast/AVG had a data collection controversy in 2020 (since addressed)
Who it is for
AVG Free is a reasonable choice if you want more than Windows Defender but don't want to pay. Bitdefender Free has less nagging and a cleaner interface. If you just want something solid with no upsells at all, Windows Defender has improved enough that many users no longer need a third party antivirus.
