Alcohol 120% - Virtual Drive and Disc Imaging

Alcohol 120% is a disc imaging tool by Alcohol Soft that creates virtual CD/DVD drives and mounts image files. Its main selling point back in the day was copy protection emulation - it could bypass SafeDisc and SecuROM on game discs. That matters less now since physical media is mostly dead, but the program still works for mounting ISOs and managing disc image collections.

The free edition gives you 2 virtual drives. The paid version goes up to 31. It runs on Windows only.

What it does

Right-click any ISO, MDS, CCD, or BIN file and select "Mount with Alcohol" to load it into a virtual drive. The image appears in Windows Explorer as if you inserted a physical disc. To create an image from a real CD or DVD, use the Image Making Wizard in the main window - pick your source drive, choose a format (MDS or ISO), and hit Start.

The library in the main window shows all your disc images in one place. You can add folders to scan, and Alcohol catalogs everything it finds. Converting between formats (MDS to ISO, CCD to ISO) works through the right-click context menu on any image in the library.

Disc burning is also included - the Image Burning Wizard writes images to physical CD/DVD media. The 1:1 copy feature duplicates discs directly from drive to drive or from drive to image file.

Advantages

  • Supports many image formats (ISO, MDS, CCD, BIN, NRG, CUE)
  • Free edition available with 2 virtual drives
  • Copy protection emulation for legacy game discs
  • Image library keeps everything organized

Drawbacks

  • Windows 10/11 can mount ISOs natively now, reducing the need
  • Free version limited to 2 virtual drives
  • Interface hasn't been modernized in years
  • DAEMON Tools Lite and PowerISO offer similar features

Who it is for

Alcohol 120% is mostly useful if you have a collection of disc images in various formats (not just ISO) or need copy protection emulation for old games. If you only need to mount standard ISOs, Windows does that natively now. For more advanced virtual drive setups or legacy format support, Alcohol still fills a niche.
