AIMP - Free Music Player
AIMP is a free music player by Artem Izmaylov that plays pretty much any audio format you throw at it - MP3, FLAC, AAC, OGG, WMA, APE, WavPack, and dozens more. It's been a popular Winamp alternative in Russia and Eastern Europe for years, and it deserves more attention in the West. The interface is clean, the 20-band equalizer is better than what most players offer, and it includes a built-in audio converter and tag editor.
Free for both personal and commercial use. Runs on Windows, Android, and Linux.
What it does
Drag audio files or folders into AIMP and they start playing. The playlist system supports multiple tabs, smart playlists that auto-populate based on filters (artist, year, rating), and queue management. The 20-band equalizer (View > Equalizer) gives you more precise control over sound than the typical 10-band setup in most players.
The audio converter (Tools > Audio Converter) handles batch format conversion between most audio formats. The tag editor lets you fix metadata (artist, album, title, genre) across multiple files at once. AIMP also connects to cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox) to stream your music collection without downloading everything locally.
If you care about how your player looks, AIMP supports skins. The community at aimp.ru has hundreds of them, from Winamp clones to minimal modern designs.
Advantages
- Plays every audio format you're likely to encounter
- 20-band equalizer with presets
- Built-in audio converter and tag editor
- Completely free, no ads, no paid tier
Drawbacks
- No streaming service integration (no Spotify, Tidal, etc.)
- Less known outside Eastern Europe, smaller community
- No video playback
- macOS not supported natively
Who it is for
AIMP is for people who still have a local music collection and want a player that sounds good and stays out of the way. If you miss Winamp but want something more modern, AIMP fills that gap. MusicBee is the main competitor for library management, and foobar2000 wins on customization, but AIMP hits a good middle ground between features and simplicity.
