Adobe After Effects
Adobe After Effects is a professional motion graphics and visual effects application, part of Adobe Creative Cloud. It handles animation, compositing, motion tracking, rotoscoping, and 3D effects. It is the industry standard for broadcast graphics, title sequences, and post-production VFX. Available only through Creative Cloud subscription (around $23/month standalone or $55/month with the full suite). Windows and macOS.
What it does
Everything in After Effects is layer-based. Create a composition, add layers (video clips, images, text, shapes), and animate them with keyframes on the timeline. Set a position at frame 0, a different position at frame 60, and After Effects interpolates the movement between them. This same principle applies to scale, rotation, opacity, and hundreds of effect parameters.
Motion tracking follows objects through footage - track a person's face and attach text that moves with it, or stabilize shaky handheld video. Rotoscoping (Roto Brush) lets you paint over an object in one frame and the program automatically separates it from the background through the rest of the clip. Content-Aware Fill removes unwanted objects from video by filling the area with the surrounding background.
Third party plugins like Trapcode and Element 3D extend the program with particle effects, 3D rendering, and more.
Advantages
- Industry standard for motion graphics and VFX
- Massive plugin ecosystem (Trapcode, Element 3D, and hundreds more)
- Tight integration with Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Illustrator
- Huge library of tutorials and templates online
Drawbacks
- Subscription only, no perpetual license
- Very RAM hungry - 32 GB minimum for comfortable work
- Steep learning curve for beginners
- Not a video editor - you need Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve for timeline editing
Who it is for
After Effects is for motion designers, VFX artists, and anyone making animated graphics for video. There is no real free equivalent at the same level - Blender has motion graphics capabilities but with a very different workflow. If you make YouTube intros, title animations, or visual effects for client work, After Effects is what clients expect you to use.
