Adblock Plus - Ad Blocker Extension
Adblock Plus is a free browser extension by eyeo GmbH (Germany) that blocks ads on websites. It works on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Safari, and Android. The extension is open source under GPLv3.
One thing you should know upfront: Adblock Plus allows certain ads through by default. Their "Acceptable Ads" program lets advertisers pay to have their non-intrusive ads whitelisted. You can turn this off in settings, but it is enabled out of the box.
What it blocks
Once installed, Adblock Plus blocks banner ads, video ads, popups, and pop-unders without any configuration. It uses filter lists maintained by the community. For additional protection, you can add EasyPrivacy (blocks tracking) and Fanboy's Social Blocking List (removes social media buttons) through Settings > Add filter list. You can also write your own filters for specific sites.
Premium features
The paid Premium version adds a cookie consent popup blocker (automatically rejects cookie banners), blocks floating video windows, and removes newsletter signup forms. The free version handles the core ad blocking just fine.
Advantages
- Free and open source
- Works across all major browsers
- Community maintained filter lists
- Custom filters for specific sites
Drawbacks
- Acceptable Ads lets some ads through by default - you have to manually disable it
- uBlock Origin blocks more aggressively and uses less memory
- Chrome's Manifest V3 limits what ad blockers can do in Chrome and Edge
- Some websites detect Adblock Plus and refuse to load until you whitelist them
Who it is for
Adblock Plus works for casual users who want ads gone without fiddling with settings. If you care about blocking everything possible, uBlock Origin is the better choice - it uses less memory and has no Acceptable Ads program. Firefox gives ad blockers more power than Chrome due to its extension API, so the browser you use matters.
