Zoom Workplace
Zoom Workplace is a video conferencing platform for meetings, webinars and team collaboration that supports hundreds of participants in a single call. Beyond video, it offers screen sharing, a built in chat, virtual whiteboards and cloud recording of sessions.
What it does
You can join a meeting by clicking an invite link or entering a Meeting ID in the app. Hosting a new call takes one click, after which you share the generated link with participants. During a call, the bottom toolbar gives you access to screen sharing (whole screen or a single window), recording, chat and reactions. Meetings can be scheduled in advance with calendar integration for Google Calendar and Outlook.
For larger events, breakout rooms let you split participants into smaller groups for discussions, then bring everyone back to the main session. Virtual backgrounds replace your real surroundings with an image or blur, which is useful when working from home. Recordings are saved locally or to the cloud depending on your account type, and a waiting room feature lets the host approve each guest before they enter the meeting.
Advantages
- Reliable video and audio quality even on slower connections
- Screen sharing, chat and whiteboard are all built into the same window
- Breakout rooms make it practical for workshops and group exercises
- Works on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android with consistent features
Drawbacks
- Free plan limits group meetings to 40 minutes
- Frequent updates that sometimes reset your preferences
- High CPU and RAM usage during calls with many participants or screen sharing
- End to end encryption is optional and disabled by default on most plans
Who it is for
I use Zoom Workplace for both work meetings and casual calls, and I find it the most stable option when dealing with 10 or more participants. If you only need one-on-one calls, simpler tools like Google Meet work fine without installing anything. Where Zoom pulls ahead is in larger meetings, webinars and breakout rooms, so I recommend it to teams, teachers and event organizers who need those features regularly.
