UsbFix
UsbFix is a security tool by SOSVirus that scans USB drives for malware, removes autorun infections, and vaccinates removable media against future threats. The free version covers scanning and cleaning. It runs on Windows only.
What it does
UsbFix targets a specific category of threats: malware that spreads through USB drives. These infections typically abuse the Windows autorun feature to execute automatically when a drive is plugged in, or hide your real files and replace them with malicious shortcuts (.lnk files). Plug in your USB drive, click Research, and UsbFix scans both the removable media and the system drive for related infections. Click Clean to remove everything it finds.
The Vaccinate function writes a protected autorun.inf file to your USB drive that cannot be overwritten by malware. This blocks the most common infection vector. After cleaning, files that were hidden by malware are automatically restored to their normal visible state, so you do not lose documents that appeared to have vanished.
UsbFix generates a text report after each scan, listing every detected threat and action taken. Suspicious files go to quarantine rather than being deleted immediately, so you can review and restore anything flagged by mistake.
Advantages
- Specializes in USB malware that general antivirus programs often miss
- Vaccination feature prevents autorun infections before they happen
- Automatically restores files hidden by malware
- Free version includes full scanning and cleaning
Drawbacks
- Windows only, no macOS or Linux version
- Only targets USB related threats, not a general antivirus replacement
- Interface looks dated and can feel cluttered
- Some features locked behind the paid version
Who it is for
I keep UsbFix around for situations where USB drives are shared between multiple computers, like offices, schools, and print shops. If your files on a flash drive turned into shortcuts or disappeared entirely, this is the first tool to reach for. It is not a replacement for a full antivirus, but it handles USB specific threats better than most general purpose security software.
