TeamSpeak - Voice Chat for Gaming
TeamSpeak is a voice communication app built by TeamSpeak Systems GmbH for gamers who want low-latency voice chat without the social media baggage. You host or join a server, hop into a channel, and talk. No feed, no stories, no algorithmic nonsense - just voice comms that work.
The free tier lets you run a server with up to 32 connected users, which covers most gaming groups and small communities. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.
What it does
Once you connect to a server (Connections > Connect), you land in the default channel. From there you can create sub-channels (right-click the server > Create Channel), set passwords, and limit how many people can join each one. The permission system is granular - you assign roles like admin, moderator, or guest, and control who can move users, ban people, or create new channels.
Push-to-Talk is the feature most people use (Settings > Options > Capture > Push-to-Talk). You bind a key, and your mic only transmits when you hold it down. Voice activation is also available, but Push-to-Talk keeps background noise out of the channel. File sharing works by dragging files into the chat window - everyone in the channel can download them. All connections are encrypted with AES-256 by default.
Advantages
- Low latency audio, noticeably better than Discord on weak connections
- Free server hosting for up to 32 users
- Granular permissions and channel management
- AES-256 encryption on all connections
- No account required to join a server
Drawbacks
- Interface feels dated compared to Discord
- No built-in text chat features like threads or embeds
- Smaller community now that most gamers moved to Discord
- Self-hosting a server requires some networking knowledge
Who it is for
TeamSpeak still has a loyal following among competitive gamers and groups that want control over their voice server without depending on a third party platform. If your priority is audio quality and low latency over chat features, TeamSpeak handles that better than most alternatives. Discord is more convenient for casual use, but TeamSpeak gives you ownership of the server and your data.
