qBittorrent
qBittorrent is a free, open source BitTorrent client available on Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD. It has no ads, no bundled software, no paid tier, and no tracking. The project is a community driven alternative to uTorrent, built on the Qt toolkit and libtorrent-rasterbar library.
What it does
Add a .torrent file or paste a magnet link, choose a save location, and the download starts immediately. The content selection dialog lets you uncheck individual files inside a torrent so you only download what you actually need. Speed limits can be set globally or per torrent, and a scheduler adjusts bandwidth automatically during specific hours and days of the week.
The integrated search engine queries multiple torrent indexing sites directly from the application. Install search plugins for sites like 1337x or The Pirate Bay, type a query, and results appear without opening a web browser. A web UI lets you manage downloads remotely from any device with a browser by connecting to your machine's IP address and port. For privacy, qBittorrent supports connection encryption, IP filtering lists, anonymous mode, and binding to a specific network interface so traffic only flows through your VPN tunnel.
Advantages
- Completely free and open source with no ads or bundleware
- Integrated torrent search engine with installable site plugins
- Web UI for remote torrent management from any browser
- Can bind to a VPN network interface to prevent traffic leaks
Drawbacks
- Interface looks dated compared to commercial clients
- No media streaming or preview for downloaded files
- Search plugins break when torrent sites change their layout and need manual updates
- Memory usage can climb with hundreds of active torrents on older hardware
Who it is for
I switched to qBittorrent years ago after uTorrent started bundling ads and toolbar installers, and I have not looked back. It does everything a torrent client needs to do without any of the clutter. If you want a lightweight, no nonsense BitTorrent client that respects your system and your privacy, qBittorrent is the obvious first choice.
