JDownloader
JDownloader is a free, open source download manager built for file hosting services. It works with Mega, MediaFire, Google Drive, Rapidgator, and hundreds of other hosts. Copy a link to your clipboard and JDownloader grabs it automatically, handles CAPTCHA prompts, downloads multiple files in parallel, and extracts archives after completion. Built on Java, it runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
What it does
The workflow is copy-and-go: copy a download link (or a whole page of links) to your clipboard, and JDownloader detects them in the LinkGrabber tab. Select the files you want and hit Start. Multiple files download simultaneously, and the program handles waiting times on free hosting accounts automatically.
If you have premium accounts on hosting services, add your credentials in Settings > Account Manager. JDownloader logs in and downloads at full speed without free-tier limitations. Archive extraction runs automatically after downloads complete - RAR and ZIP files unpack without you touching them.
The clipboard monitor watches for links continuously, so pasting a list of 50 links from a forum thread queues them all up at once. Speed limiting keeps downloads from saturating your internet connection.
Advantages
- Supports hundreds of file hosting services
- Automatic link detection from clipboard
- Auto-extracts archives after downloading
- Free and open source
Drawbacks
- Java dependency adds overhead and occasional update prompts
- Interface is cluttered with settings most users never need
- CAPTCHA handling can be unreliable on some hosts
- Some antivirus programs flag it as potentially unwanted
Who it is for
JDownloader is the tool for anyone who regularly downloads files from hosting services. If you download one file a month, your browser is fine. If you download batches of files from Mega or MediaFire regularly, JDownloader saves a lot of manual clicking. The automatic archive extraction alone makes it worth having.
