Comodo Firewall
Comodo Firewall is a free network security tool by Comodo Group that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic on your PC. It includes a Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) and a sandbox for running untrusted programs in isolation. Windows only.
What it does
After installation, Comodo starts monitoring all network connections. When a program tries to access the internet for the first time, a popup asks whether to allow or block it. Your choices are remembered as rules. You can review and edit these rules anytime in Firewall > Application Rules.
HIPS monitors changes to the Windows registry and system files. It alerts you when software tries to modify something sensitive, which catches malware that slips past antivirus scanners. The sandbox (Tasks > Run in Sandbox) lets you open suspicious files in a contained environment where they cannot damage your actual system.
Three firewall modes control how strict the filtering is. Safe Mode asks about unknown programs while allowing known safe ones. Custom Ruleset follows only your manually created rules. Training Mode watches your normal usage and builds rules automatically.
Advantages
- Completely free with no feature restrictions or time limits
- HIPS catches threats that traditional antivirus misses
- Built in sandbox for safely testing unknown software
- Granular control over which apps can access the network
Drawbacks
- Frequent popups during the first few days while rules are built
- The installer bundles Comodo Dragon browser and Yahoo toolbar by default
- Interface is cluttered and overwhelming for beginners
- Windows only - no macOS or Linux version available
Who it is for
I use Comodo Firewall on machines where I want to know exactly which programs talk to the internet. It is not for casual users who just want set and forget security. If you are comfortable reading firewall logs and making allow/block decisions, Comodo gives you more control than the Windows Defender Firewall ever will. GlassWire is a friendlier alternative if you only want to monitor traffic without deep rule configuration.
