BitTorrent - Torrent Client
BitTorrent is a torrent client by Rainberry, Inc. - the same company behind uTorrent. In fact, BitTorrent and uTorrent share the same engine. The interface is slightly different, the branding is different, but under the hood they behave identically. The free version shows ads, and paid tiers remove them while adding features like antivirus scanning.
It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. If you already use uTorrent, there is no technical reason to switch to BitTorrent or vice versa.
What it does
Add a torrent file (File > Add Torrent) or paste a magnet link (File > Add from URL) and the download starts. You can select which files to download from a multi file torrent by double-clicking the torrent entry and unchecking what you don't need in the Files tab.
Speed limiting is in Options > Preferences > Connection, where you set upload and download caps. The scheduler (Options > Preferences > Scheduler) lets you define active hours so heavy downloading happens overnight. After a download finishes, the client automatically seeds the file to other users. You can stop seeding by right-clicking and selecting Stop, or set a ratio limit after which seeding stops automatically.
Remote access through the Web UI (Options > Preferences > Web UI) lets you manage downloads from a phone or another computer via a browser.
Advantages
- Familiar interface if you have used any torrent client before
- Magnet link support, no need for .torrent files
- Scheduler for off-peak downloading
- Available on all major platforms
Drawbacks
- Ads in the free version
- Essentially identical to uTorrent (same company, same engine)
- qBittorrent is open source and ad-free
- Occasional bundleware offers during installation
Who it is for
BitTorrent works fine as a torrent client, but there is little reason to pick it over qBittorrent (open source, no ads) or even uTorrent (same thing with a different name). If you already have it installed and it works, no need to change. For new installations, qBittorrent is the better choice.
