BitComet - BitTorrent Client
BitComet is a BitTorrent client for Windows that also works as an HTTP and FTP download manager. It has been around since 2003, made by Comet Network. Free for personal use. The main thing that sets it apart from other torrent clients is the combined torrent + direct download support in one program, and a video preview feature that lets you watch files before they finish downloading.
What it does
For torrents, it works like any other client: open a .torrent file or paste a magnet link and it downloads. You can select which files to grab, set priorities, and schedule downloads. DHT and peer exchange (PEX) work without a tracker. The HTTP/FTP downloader means you can use BitComet for regular file downloads too, with resume support and multi-threaded downloading.
The video preview feature downloads the beginning and end of a video file first, so you can start watching before the full download completes. Long-Term Seeding keeps files available even after the original seeders disappear.
Advantages
- Combined torrent client and HTTP/FTP download manager
- Video preview before download completes
- Long-term seeding for rare torrents
- Free with no ads
Drawbacks
- Banned from most private trackers due to a 2005 DHT abuse incident
- Windows only
- Development is slow compared to qBittorrent
- qBittorrent is open source, cross-platform, and more actively maintained
Who it is for
BitComet works as a straightforward torrent client if you also want HTTP/FTP downloading in the same program. If you use private trackers, BitComet is likely banned there - use qBittorrent or Deluge instead.
